An interesting potential but I am not sure the world needs a bigger union and I think that they are missing the real challenge which is to give the member more of a voice, but that would mean that they (Union leaders) have less of a voice.

I think this will generate some discussion if there are any readers left out there. I have been too busy with a real job to do much here but I hope to rectify that.
so many are gone....yet the public is led to believe that this government is adding more to the employed in Canada. Sure part time and for 10 bucks per hour. It is known that in India and China 75 cents per hour to 1.50 per hour is a good income. the twu knows that is what is happening. Ask around, that is where my job has gone. Jobs from telus that have gone overseas are 20-30 buck per hour jobs. I have friends that are working as contractors for telus (here in Canada) and they make a wage and no benifits but medical. (and they speak manderin, french and english) Yea, like that will make me be able to afford a house here in Canada.
Why is no one (surely not the twu) bringing this up? becuz they are on the gravy train and don't give a flying f*** about us!!
And the TELUS executive are quiet. wouldn't you be if you were wholeselling your company off overseas Shhhhhhhh!

This is a tough one...

On one side, I agree fully with that poster. I am in whatever situation I am in because of choices that I personally have made. not because of some other entity. You can't blame your spending more than you make on anyone but yourself.

However on the flip side, I'm sick of seeing government bowing to financial interests, wether that be bailouts for businesses that made bad decisions (why do they get to keep the profits if they do well, but we pay the losses if they don't?) or laws protecting domestic industry (buy American is hardly limited to the US... just try buying a new car from outside of North America to see what I mean!) Or Draconian labour laws (What do you mean I have to pay money to an organization that does nothing for me and that I want no part of?) or all sorts of other things that government should have no hand in.

So while one part of me wants to yell at all the "occupy" people to grow up and get a job, the other part of me agrees with what they're saying. There is no question that Governments around the world do far more to represent special interests (read MONEY) than they do to represent the "99%" of the population who theoretically elect them.

Like the IKEA one, I am going to see if they will let me post there.

Again, sorry for the long absence, I am trying to make money, it has been a slow summer.

We have lost an opponent who would have been good for Canadian politics:

Jack Layton wrote:

August 20, 2011

Toronto, Ontario

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election.

To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

wow! The twu allows all sorts of jobs to go off shore, but now they want us to protect another unions jobs that are to be "down sold"? How funny is that. All across Canada our jobs are not only "off shored" they are just sent to companies in the U.S. The whole world knows, and the twu exec should shove off and let the "old guys who where there (pre- them) to come back and set things straight. No matter what side they were on, (politically) the old twu was always on the side of the workers (not themselves).. Let's see what jobs are next to be "off Shored". That is such a simplification. All that statement means is "de-unionized" workers in the U.S. are close and they want telus jobs. The U.K. is laughing. They have been through this already. Asia has a huge piece of the pie. The belief is that our exec has already given up and are just trying to get huge by-outs, therefore huge pensions when they leave!! Maybe they get their medical paid for them and their families lives. (who's to know). And they wonder why people wouldn't wipe there shoes on them!
UFCW 1518 vs IGA #15 – Locked Out

Public service employees are going to be the next big target group for technologies. They are already ineffectual and overpaid. Only my opinion granted but one doe snot have to go far to see the average governement employee is not the basiton of efficiency.

I sent three decisions to your email, i can't post to the site so you will have to. they are bc decisions that support the idea that employees are protected from their unions when participating in board proceedings, or making applications pursuant to the labour code.

B302 - (1998) is directly related to a decert vote.
C217 - (1989) is directly related to a decert vote.
B8 - (1988) is related to a vote that the unions forbid employees to take part in.

The board finds against the union in all these cases. in particular in the first two both unions try to persue the employees for trying to decertify and both lose.

In the interest of only that I'm lazy, I'm just copying what I just posted on VFC:

With time to digest the judgement and a meeting with my lawyer this morning out of the way, I can report that I know 2 things:

1) We are appealing. This decision has implications that go well beyond me and the TWU. It cannot be let stand.

2) If my signature ever finds its way to a confidentiality agreement relative to the TWU, it will have been signed with a pen clutched by my cold, dead hands. I can be beat, bullied and worse, but I will *never* be silenced. That's just not the way I roll.
(a) One special assessment in any one calendar year not to exceed one day’s pay may be levied by the Executive Council or Convention with a 66-2/3% majority in cases of emergency or when income is inadequate to finance the necessary expenses of the Union but only after ratification by referendum of the membership.

(b) Additional assessments may be levied by the Executive Council or Convention but not until the additional assessment has been ratified by referendum of the membership.

... but NC, what is a Referendum Ballot (You may ask).

Quote:

ARTICLE XIX
Balloting
1. The Convention or the Executive Council may order a referendum of the membership with respect to any subject or policy within their jurisdiction or as otherwise provided in this Constitution.

2. All referendums shall be by secret ballot and voting conducted either by mail or at meetings where members receive prior notification. Referendum ballots shall be accompanied by the proposals to be voted on and shall specify the date of return. A majority of the votes cast shall determine the referendum unless otherwise specified in this Constitution.

3. The ballots shall be returned to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Union by a method that guarantees security.

4. The ballots shall be counted by the Secretary-Treasurer of the Union together with three (3) members. Ballots not marked in the prescribed manner shall be deemed spoiled and not counted in the total votes cast.

5. An absentee ballot may be issued by the Secretary-Treasurer of the Union upon the written request of the individual member prior to the specified meeting and shall be for the sole purpose of voting on matters under the jurisdiction of the Convention or the Executive Council. An absentee shall be considered as a member who is working, sick, on acation or located in an area making it impossible to attend the meeting where the vote is to be conducted.

Nothing came out of the Special Convention!! We paid a lot more money for convention delegates to sit around and yak about how upset they were with the twu. John Carpenters recall went by the board because the Quebec delegates didn't word it properly!! or follow proper procedures!! The Quebec delegates think the twu is a phoney union. (What a surprise!!) the whole day was a whining session, people crying, making up....yada,yada,yada. gag, gag, gag....hope everyone leaves feeling good!!! Next THE OSCARS!!!

The contract length is a pain, but not what stops a decert, it's the fact that there are 12,000+ employees. 6,000+ signatures in 3 months is hopeless. the TWU woudl then empty the bank account trumpeting ULP's until the CIRB finally caves and dismisses the application.

The CIRB would be fighting hand in hand with the TWU. I would be the most painful case of "homer" reffing. They would throw penatly after penalty at the decert applicants and Telus... but it would be fun to watch.

At least you don't need to worry about union fines or "member in bad standing" as you have all crossed that bridge.

Thanks for the input Corwin, it's refreshingly received but I concur with green. By the time the TWU is reformed and effective, a lot more abuse is likley to have occured.

The union formula needs to be revamped for a modern world. The European model is more workable, but no Canadian union will give up the right to forced dues. There's nothing stopping them from writing it into a CA but none would because they would lose far too much money, so here we stand staring at the "business model" union until one of them steps into the future.

That would never fly, and I agree it would be a nice thing to see but in the eyes of the Labour Board I suspect that because you are all in a "collective" you cannot sue yourself. The action will have been supported by some sort of vote that met your union's constitution or By-laws.

I would so love to see you guys all working union-free, reward people for their worth, not their length of term in office. The TWU could work, but the executive is just too powerful, no matter who holds office.

Alas, that's how unionization works in Canada.
