Hey everyone. I got some time to do the latest update to the board software, but it meant that all the old modifications and styles wouldn't work anymore. So, here you have the newest iteration of LabourTalk. Please let me know by Private Message if you run into any issues with the new styling. Some new features on the board are:

  • Latest HTML5 Responsive Styling - You can now see a new, more modern styling on the board. Along with this, you can resize the browser to see the board change with it. The board is now functional on all sizes of screens, including your cell phone, table and desktop/laptop.
  • Post Sharing - Although you could previously, the new layout means the sharing icons are more visible on the lower right hand corner of each post. Click your favourite social media outlet to share the desired post with them.
  • Multiple Themes - Previously there was only one theme in an attempt to lower the workload when modifications were put in place. Fortunately, the new modification system is much simpler to implement and we now have multiple colour options for you to enjoy. You can change these from your User Control Panel under the Board Settings heading.
  • Announcements - Announcements can now be posted here (where you're seeing this one) and, in most cases, can be dismissed. To dismiss them, please click the "X" in the top right corner of this box.
  • Collapsing Categories - Categories, such as News & Announcements or Welcome (below), can be collapsed to clear up some of the clutter. This state should be maintained as long as you're logged in.

We hope you like the changes!

Bargaining Committee Update-July 12

Since our last communication, your TWU/Telus Bargaining Committee has been researching and preparing our 2010 package for the beginning of the face-to-face negotiations with Telus. We have taken some new and promising steps in preparing for bargaining this year.In early June, the TWU and Telus met to discuss bargaining procedures and ground rules, which were set and agreed to by both parties. On July 6 and 7, the Committee met with the Company at Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services to take part in joint training, covering skills such as communication and impasse avoidance. The Committee views these proceedings as positive steps toward respectful bargaining on both sides. The bargaining package is complete and the Committee continues to fine tune it in preparation for the exchange of proposals.Notice to bargain will be sent to the Company on July 19 with face-to-face bargaining scheduled to begin on July 26. The Committee continues to work diligently on what will be an important round of negotiations and will continue to update members throughout the process.

I see bargaining is about to begin., this round the company knows the union is powerless and doesn't have much support from membership. I can't believe the union had 5 years to try to rebuild membership support since the strike and they did nothing. I think this should be the easiest bargaining in history. I'm thinking we get a %1 or %1.5 raise per year from the company and that's about it. Any other thoughts?

That's a bit disappointing - honestly.

I guess the union was a fractured mess from 2006 to, say 2008, maybe early 2009, but that still leaves a year for the TWU to get it a bit more together for this.

Not only does Telus know the union is powerless, the union knows it has no mandate from the employees (I purposely avoided the word "members"). The worst has come to pass, the TWU is "cap-in-hand".

You guys have got to get rid of this idiot tax called "union dues".

It's over now, right? Oh come on...they sat face to face yesterday, the company pretended to take the bargaining committee seriously, then they all went for dinner. (tongue in cheek) The union was had and will continue being had but they will think they are doing such a great job all the while getting sucked in. Do you think they will understand what is happening? If they get a big buy in/out from the company and the union they won't give a s**t!!

This year it will all be about putting on a good show. TELUS will allow them to look good becauase they want this union to stay in place.

the company will probably roll the contract over. Signing bonus and 2%(maybe) raise. some issues like banked overtime and a change in benefits may be in the works. All in all it is to not make waves. Hopefully over soon. It doesn't make the twu look any more credible in the eyes of the membership that they are dragging this out. Just bellying up to the trough,as usual. "Get on with it and get it over with so we can get on with our lives" and the twu ersatz leaders can crawl away and retire with big fat bonuses and pensions. (not to mention how much the bargaining team is shoveling into their pockets as this farce carries on).

Well, I assume our new contract will be very similar to the agreement that was just ratified between TELUS and CUPE. Does anyone know any details about pay raises or a signing bonus?

I wouldn't count on a signing bonus, the last contract didn't have one.
What it had was back-pay to deal with the long gap between contracts (5 years or so)
So unless we end up with another long gap between our current contract expiring, and a new one being signed, don't expect any lump sum at all.

So far nobody is saying anything about the negotiations at all... they've been in negotiations for over a month now, and we still don't know what the issues are?
