Ray Hope... what a nice name that would be next to George Doubt.

So, that's it, your dues go up to 2.1% now? Does this increase have to be ratified by any sort of vote?

The dues increase passed narrowly. It must be ratified by the membership. As it is a constitutional amendment, it will require the support of 66 2/3. With 46 registered negative votes, there may not be an army of delegates in the workplace encouraging members to vote in favour. It is also likely that members and local execs will remember the “do-over” of 2006 and be extremely diligent in their observation of how this vote is carried out.

I read on VFC that Business Agents were (re)elected as follows: Colin Brehaut and Tamara Marshall, Burnaby; Betty Lockhurst, Calgary; Martin C, Montreal.

Well at least there is something that we can focus on. We need to hand the exec a defeat of this dues increase. with things as bad as they are all over I can't imagine that they could possibly get the two thirds required unless they resort to some shady dealings.

If memory serves, they cheated... I seem to recall that it did not get the required 2/3 but raised the dues anyway.

Failing that though, the type of people who still attend union meetings are the type who vote however they are told to vote (that's why they're still welcome at the meetings) and there's no need for 2/3 of the membership to approve it, only 2/3 of the people who happen to show up at a meeting.

Yes, that was what I suspected. I'd make a bajillion dollar bet that the vote happens very soon, very fast, and with very, very short notice. it is probably going on now.

Didn't you get the notice?

Maybe they will use their members hard earned money to take themselves to the Olympics in B.C. Politicing should be rewarded, right?
Keep your eyes peeled.....
